The annual winter solstice event is an early morning silent

is a special time of inner quiet and the sharing of tea heart to
heart, as the sun rises on this shortest day of the year.
Some sitting cushions will be available, but bring your own if
you have one. If you wish to spend the night at the charming
Mabel Dodge Luhan House on December 20 (and not have to drive in
the dark early morning), call 1.800.846.2235, or go to
www.mabeldodgeluhan.com.
Jean Kenin also offers her home for those who would like to come
help with the event and stay over; please contact Jean at the
reservation number above.

nature of beauty in Chado? How can we describe the aesthetics of
Chado to our guests?
How can we create beauty for our guests and ourselves? While
this subject is vast, we will focus our discussion around the
grounded concepts of mono no aware and wabi, two central themes
of Chado's aesthetics.
For preparation, please carefully read the following essay,
which takes an academic approach to wabi: The Wabi Aesthetic
Through The Ages, by Haga Koshiro (translated and adapted by
Martin Collcutt) pp.
195-227 in the book Tea In Japan: Essays on the History of
Chanoyu, edited by Paul Varley and Kamakura Isao, University of
Hawaii Press.
Copies of the article will be provided to participants in
January.
Annual Meeting of Members: Chado New Mexico is your group - come
find out what's happening, and let us know your ideas for
activities both for members and our larger communities. The
schedule of sponsored events for rest of 2012 will be planned
during this meeting, and there will be plenty of time for
everyone's participation and new ideas.
Your participation really matters!

come watch the Super Bowl on a large screen are welcome! Bring
something to share for a half time potluck dinner.
Kagetsu Classes
Saturday & Sunday, Feb. 18 & 19
Location: the von Briesen's home, 208 Sereno Drive, Santa
Fe, NM
Times: Two classes each day: 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, or 1:30
PM to 5:00 PM
Fee: $30 per person for each class, due with registration
(refund policy will be provided)
Registration: These classes are open to students studying Tana
Usucha or above. Contact Sakina at
chadonm@cybermesa.com.
Each class is limited to five students, who must be present for
the entire class.
You may attend more than one class if you are all right with long
periods of sitting seiza.
Kagetsu is one of the seven exercises (Shichijishiki) that were
developed in the 18th century through a collaboration of the
eighth Urasenke grand tea master, Itto, Omotesenke grand master
Joshinsai, and zen master Mugaku Souen of Daitokuji. It is a
fundamental building block in one's Tea study, and proficiency
in Kagetsu enables one to study the other Shichijishiki. Kagetsu
also allows one to develop a better sense of the phrase, "Ichi
Za Kon Ryu," loosely translated as, "One space, one breath." The
emphasis of these classes will be on matching one's rhythm with
that of others. In essence, we will be attempting to release our
individual personalities and meld our selves into the larger
flow. And, it's a whole lot of fun! A good grasp of Tana Usucha
(thin tea with a utensil stand) and the ability to move around
the tearoom swiftly are prerequisites.
Save these dates for upcoming events:
Sunday, March 25: Rikyuki, the annual commemoration of
the death of Sen no Rikyu, at Kevin Padilla's home in
Albuquerque.
Friday, March 2: Willi Singleton ceramics show opens at
the Weyrich Gallery in Albuquerque. Willi will also give a talk
in Santa Fe to Chado New Mexico members in early March, date to
be announced.
Saturday, March 31: Santa Fe JIN Matsuri. This year's
theme is "pop".
Chado NM has been invited to do a Chanoyu demonstration on the
main stage, and will offer free matcha and sweets in a side room
at the Santa Fe Convention Center. Many volunteers will be
needed!
May 11-13: Christy Bartlett sensei study intensive in
Santa Fe.
